Established in 2020, the Department of Sanskrit at Alipurduar University began its academic journey by offering Undergraduate (Honours and Program) courses along with a Master of Arts (M.A.) program. At the postgraduate level, the Department provides specialization in Vedic Literature.The Department places strong emphasis on interdisciplinary research, integrating traditional areas of Sanskrit studies with contemporary academic approaches. Regular seminars, workshops, and guest lectures are organized to enrich the academic environment and foster scholarly exchange.Committed to promoting Sanskrit language and literature in the region, the Department actively conducts Sanskrit Literacy Programs in rural areas. These initiatives aim to broaden access to Sanskrit education and generate awareness about its cultural and intellectual significance.The Department's thrust areas include Grammar, Vedic Studies, Poetics, Aesthetics, Culture, Philosophy, Scientific approaches to ancient texts, and a wide range of interdisciplinary studies.

In Indian culture and tradition, Sanskrit is a classical language that holds the timeless wisdom of ancient thinkers, poets, and philosophers. Known as Saṃská¹›tam- meaning refined, pure, and cultured- it was valued for its rich structure and expressive power. Since ancient times, Sanskrit has served as a key medium for both literary and spoken expression. It encompasses a wide range of subjects, including Vedic literature, drama, poetry, grammar, philosophy, logic, spirituality, ethics, medicine (Ä€yurveda), astronomy, mathematics, architecture, law, politics, agriculture, and environmental studies. These texts reflect the depth and diversity of India’s intellectual and cultural heritage.
